Obesity is a word that’s thrown around a lot these days. It’s quite a shocking word now. When we hear it, it makes us stand up and listen. The fact of the matter is, everyone is getting fatter. Our nation is getting heavier and more, and more people are obese. Kids are fatter; old people are fatter. It’s not healthy at all. If you care about your family’s physical health, you’ll do all you can to stop them becoming obese. How can you do this? It’s simple; you just have to be a healthy family. You should eat healthy, drink healthy, and be active. There’s nothing more to it; there’s no secret that I have to share. It’s honestly that simple.

However, there’s a reason we’re an obese nation. If being a healthy family is so easy, then why isn’t every family healthy? It’s because there’s too much temptation out there. We see sweets in the cabinets and go for them. Our kids are asking for cookies, so we give them some. Slowly but surely your whole family starts getting out of shape. So, how can your family deal with temptations? By getting rid of them of course! Stop buying so much junk food, get healthy snacks instead. The more healthy food your family eats, the more they’ll enjoy it. Eventually, they won’t have cravings for many unhealthy treats.

Another thing you should do is be active as a family. Every weekend, go for a long family walk or bike ride. Join a yoga class or sign up for a gym membership. Where your kids are concerned, you can help them out too. Sign them up for local sports teams or clubs at school. Make sure they’re active, take them out to the park when you can. If your children are active, they’ll grow up healthy.

Oral Health

Oral health is very important for everybody. It’s essential that you do what you can to ensure your family has healthy teeth and gums. An unhealthy mouth can lead to a bunch of serious medical conditions. One simple tip is to make sure your family sees the dentist on a regular basis. It’s normally recommended that you go every few months for a regular checkup. If something is wrong with your teeth, your dentist will usually call you back in earlier.

A dentist can check for all manner of issues relating to your teeth and gums. They’ll be able to pick up on gum disease before it hits, giving you a chance to prevent it. Pretty much any oral health issue you can think of, a dentist can identify it before it happens. If you aren’t taking your family to see a dentist, then you’re all going to be in trouble. You won’t know you have any issues until they happen. It’s especially important that you take your kids to the dentist because they probably eat lots of sugary foods. Sweets, soft drinks, etc. are all bad for their teeth. Try and cut down on these things if you want them to have good oral health.

But, it’s also important that you and your partner get seen to as well. Many of us may not have been to the dentist regularly when we were children. So, it’s not uncommon to find out that we have a few issues that need to be taken care of. A lot of adults find that they need dental crowns because one or two of their teeth are damaged.  It’s also common to have a few fillings and maybe even a tooth removed. So, take your family to the dentist and get these issues sorted.

Mental Health

You can’t forget about your family’s mental health either. I think that a lot of families don’t do enough to care for each other’s mental health. We don’t ask enough questions and see how everyone is doing. People could be suffering with mental health problems and we don’t even know it. So, that’s my first tip here, speak to your family. Talk to one another and be open about everything. An open family is one that isn’t afraid to share things. If someone is struggling with something, they’re more likely to speak up about it if you’re an open family. Issues like depression and anxiety are more common than you think. Particularly in teenagers and males. Talk to your male partner and son, make sure you know that they’re okay.

Kids can also suffer from mental health issues. Your child may be getting bullied at school, and it could affect them mentally. If you feel like your child is acting differently and seems closed off, try and find out what the problem is. Kids are meant to be happy and full of life. So, when yours isn’t, there could be something wrong. Find out if they’re getting bullied and then go to the school and sort the problem out. You don’t want them to keep getting bullied as it can have long lasting effects on their psyche.

Apart from talking to one another, is there anything you can do to look after your family’s mental health? Yes, there is, and it’s just as simple as talking. You need to have a very friendly and happy family environment at home. This is so important, not just for you, but for your kids. In fact, it’s more important for your kids. They can’t grow up in a toxic environment, it can lead to issues down the line. Make sure family life is always happy and that arguments are kept to a minimum. It’s especially key that you and your partner get along well. If you’re always arguing in front of the kids, it can cause various problems to their mental health. A happy family is a healthy family, remember that.

Eye & Ear Health

My final point revolves around the eye and ear health of your family. Your eyes and ears are two very important parts of your body. Believe it or not, but you need them to see and hear. Shocking, I know! When you have issues with these two things, your senses will be affected. There are many health problems that can occur if you don’t have proper eye and ear health. You must ensure that your family’s eyesight and hearing is well taken care of.

To do this, your family should get their sight and hearing checked throughout the year. Much like with dental check-ups, these are done every few months. By getting them checked on, you ensure that no issues are occurring. And, if there are any, you can get them sorted without any problems. Many people that complain of constant headaches end up finding out that they had issues with their eyes and needed glasses. Similarly, earaches can be related to hearing issues. Regular checkups ensure that any small problems are sorted before they become big problems.

I can’t stress enough how important it is that you care for the health of your children’s ears and eyes. Eye problems are very common in young children, so you need to stay on top of them. Some young kids suffer from issues like lazy eye syndrome. A child with a lazy eye needs to get it fixed or it will become a lifelong issue. If you take them to an eye doctor or optician, they’ll be able to sort out a way to fix it. Similarly, if your child has hearing issues, you should try and get them sorted as soon as possible. You might be able to prevent any long-term issues if you sort it out right away.
