It’s never to late, it’s not that difficult, it brings focus, it aligns your goals, its fun, its creative, its life changing, this is YOUR year to do it.
Do what? Choose one word
For more years than I can remember I have been choosing ONE word.
A word to challenge me, keep me focused, a word to assist me in setting goals for my myself, my family and new opportunities that God brings my way.
Yes ,the year has begun and we are already three days into a new year but like I said it’s never to late. There is no time limit on when you need to choose your one word.
So, why Choose One Word:
– Gives clarity
– Allows you to focus on specific areas of your life
– Creates a theme for your year
– Driving force for the year
– Provides a vision of how you want the year to go
– Gives us a game plan for our year
– A renewed purpose and meaning
– Changes our thinking, attitudes, even the words we speak
– Useful in making decisions throughout the year
– Challenges us to grow and improve ourselves, our habits.
– Most of all it’s Life Changing
Often as moms our brains are on overload. We often forget our dreams, goals, even our kids names. By choosing one word for the year it gives us only one word to focus on as we navigate life in our mom world and our own personal life journey.
Rather then just setting goals and checking off a list of accomplishments. Choosing one word will assist you in a new mind set of setting goals of what you want this year to be. Becoming who you were meant to be rather then just checking off all the things you accomplished.
Choosing one word can help simplify your life because you are focusing on one word to approach, shape and drive your year.
“If you want your life to change……to be more rewarding and exciting than ever….you can do it with just ONE WORD” –
(Authors one word that will change your life book)
Are you already thinking or asking out loud “How do I choose just one word?”
How to choose your One Word
To me this is the most exciting part of choosing one word to navigate my world. It’s not that difficult. However this is when you have to be intentional and decide you are all “IN” for this idea of choosing One Word for your year.
Let’s get started choosing your word:
1. Unplug – Set aside alone time with zero distractions
I know as moms thats nearly impossible. However this might mean choosing one morning that you will get up an hour earlier or stay up later. Or asking your husband or others to watch your kids so you can head to a coffee shop or a space where you can place focus on choosing your one word.
Be sure to turn off all distractions so that you can focus.
2. Reflect – Now that you have some alone time with out distractions. Take a few minutes to reflect on your life. You can use these questions to get your brain thinking and reflecting on the past, present and future
– What do I want my life to be like this year
– What characteristics would I like to have
– What areas of my life would I like to change or be challenged in
– What are your passions
Think about the various areas of your life – Personal, family , work, ministry volunteering etc.
Create a list of areas you want to work on, challenge yourself, change, new habits you want to create, things to accomplish , personal, family, business goals.
3. Now look at your answers and see if there is a pattern or similarities or even a theme.
4. Next list out words that reflect the pattern, similarity or theme. words that would inspire you, challenge you , change you.
Do you want your one word to be one that inspires action or a focus word or one that is more descriptive?
Need some inspiration? I created a list of 105 word ideas. Just click here and you can quickly download it and even print it .
Decide which one word on your list feels like it will be the MOST inspiring , challenging and will be useful in making decisions throughout the year
Thats your word!
For example my word for 2020 needed to challenge me in every area of my life to grow, to step out into new territory, to have faith, to go after my crazy big dreams, to be fearless. I choose the word GRIT because it filled so many of those areas for me…..Determination, tenacity, perseverance and so much more . I will get up each day and remind myself to go after it with pure GRIT.
Now that we have chosen our one word it’s time to implement it into our daily world.
Implementing your one word
Write it down, say it out loud, share it with others. I have found that the more I talk about it, think about it , and begin asking myself through out the day, week and months am I living my day out with this word as my focus it becomes a habit.
Now that you have chosen your one word for the year you can have a little fun with it by creating visuals to remind you of your one word for the year.
A few years back I ordered a binder and a clipboard from zazzle.com with my one word on it. I then used this binder as my planner/calendar and used the clipboard to hold my to do lists etc.
Some other fun personalized ideas to create or have created are:
Coffee Mug
Tote bag
Jewelry
Key chain
Small painting
Painted Rock
Window Clings
etsy.com is another great place to search for personalized items that you cam put your one word of the year on .
If you plan on creating a Dream /Vision Board this is also another place to create a visual of your word for the year.
Now that you have started or joined in on this annual tradition of choosing one word why not try this as a family. Teaching your kids to choose a word or choose a family word. This is also a great exercise for your business, ministry, volunteer teams or even to do with friends.
