Mattresses don’t always get the love and care they need. I can’t remember the last time I cleaned my mattress. You probably haven’t thought about cleaning it in a while. In fact, it is suggested we clean it every six months.
After all, if you think about it, we spend around six to 6 hours on it every night sleeping. During this time, it becomes filled with dirt and grime. Oils from our body make its way onto it.
Here are some quick tips I used to easily clean my mattress that I think you might find helpful!
Vacuum the Dust
The first step to clean your mattress is to remove the dust. Use the upholstery tool on your vacuum cleaner. Run it across the top and sides of your mattress. This will helps remove the dust, food crumbs, pet hair, and more. It’s a good idea to do this every couple of months if you have a family member that has allergies.
If you have a garment steamer you can use this on your mattress. Use the steam nozzle and get as close as you can to the mattress. Then vacuum the mattress once more.
Remove the Stains
If you find some stains on your mattress while cleaning there are some things you can do to remove the stains.
Here are some options to try.
- Use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, liquid dish soap, and baking soda. Put into a spray bottle and then spray the stained area. Blot or rub with a clean rag. Allow it to air dry.
- Try a non-toxic natural enzyme cleaner that will help chemically break down and remove the stains.
Get Rid of the Odors
Do you smell a stale odor on your mattress? You can spray the mattress with disinfecting spray. Lysol is a great brand product to use for this as it will kill the bacteria causing the doors.
To quickly freshen your mattress, use baking soda on the fabric and brush it lightly. Wait 15 minutes and then vacuum up the baking soda. You can always sprinkle a light layer over the entire surface and let it sit for a couple of hours. Make sure you vacuum in the crevices to completely remove the powder from the mattress.
Cover & Protect It
A mattress cover is important to have over your mattress. It helps keep the dirt and stains off your mattress. You can easily wash your mattress cover on a regular basis. As well, a mattress cover will help ensure the condition of your mattress is pristine and last long.
