This is a terrifying phrase for many parents that has unfortunately become their current reality. With the current COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing and the closing of non-essential businesses, your children’s education is now in your hands. What are you supposed to do?
The first and most important thing is to make your kids feels secure. Routine is extremely important to children and theirs has been disrupted. They are no longer in school, and they also no longer have their out of school routine.
Children love a routine. While some schedules may be more relaxed, it’s important to post and keep a schedule. Create a schedule for the day or week and post it where everyone can see it. Everyone should know what is coming when. Check off activities as you accomplish them.
The schedule can include more than just “school” activities. You can also set chore time, quiet time, screen time and recess. It’s important to get up, get dressed and start your day as you would at any other time.
Be consistent with bedtimes and wake times. While these can be more relaxed than when the school day started with a bell, they should be consistent. The right amount of sleep is important for all members of the family.
Along with setting a schedule, set clear expectations for your children. If your school district has provided you with coursework, or requirements that need to be completed, ensure you are meeting the expectations of your school district.
If possible, create a space for schoolwork to happen. Keep in mind that all learning does not need to take place within this space. You can practice spelling using sidewalk chalk, you can teach math and chemistry through baking. A walk through the neighborhood park can lead to lessons in botany.
Keep in mind that children will not be as focused as they are in school. The teacher-student relationship is very different than the parent as teacher-child as student relationship. To help keep kids focused, ensure your schedule includes recess.
Is your child still having difficulty concentrating? Are they easily distracted and hyperactive? Are they struggling to stay on task? If you answered yes to any of these questions, Native Remedies® can help, naturally.
