Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions a parent can make for their child’s future. For first-time parents, the task of researching schools and deciding on which school to place their children in can be daunting.

There are various curriculums available in today’s schooling sector and you have probably heard of the Montessori method of education.

What Is Montessori?

The Montessori method of education was founded by Dr Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, and educator born in 1870. Dr Montessori was asked to set up a school for disadvantaged and uneducated children in Rome and through her experience and observation in this environment, she discovered that children essentially taught themselves through the process of discovery.

Dr Montessori discovered that children absorbed information through hands-on activities as they possess a natural curiosity to learn. She created learning apparatus such as puzzles to assist children in learning and absorbing information.

The Montessori philosophy is based on self-directed activities, explorative play and hands-on learning guided by facilitators in a classroom. Child-centered learning environments is the basis of the classroom which encourages children to form habits in natural learning.

Are All Children Suited For Montessori?

Montessori is a respectful and peaceful way of educating children. Mutual respect, consideration, and courtesy are the main cornerstones of Montessori education. Children are treated as individuals and their needs are met by providing visual, auditory, and tactile apparatus which encourage independence.

Children from households that encourage individuality and have a certain structure to their home lives will thrive in a Montessori school. Children who are driven by reward systems will not do as well in this environment, as the freedom of movement within a classroom may be too difficult to navigate.

Children who need to move often in order to learn or concentrate can be accommodated within the Montessori environment, and the naturally curious child who questions thought processes will also thrive in this system.

Montessori Myths

Many parents or educators have expressed their concern for Montessori being a ‘hippie’ way of teaching or that children are allowed the freedom to do whatever they want, but the opposite is true. Montessori schools have boundaries and limits to what children may or may not do and structure the environments in such a way that a sense of responsibility and accountability is fostered.

Although individuality is celebrated and encouraged, the planning process to learn is taught to children to help structure their days and to ensure they complete the module of work set out appropriate to their age group. Students quickly adopt the Montessori method and apply themselves in order to accomplish tasks which educate them appropriately. Self-discipline is an integral part of the Montessori learning process.

Montessori pre-schools are especially good at giving young children the opportunity to not only play but to learn through play and prepare them for school. Life skills are an important part of the Montessori curriculum. Life skills teach children the importance of caring for and cleaning their environments by introducing independence in these activities.
