When Mike Patterson was recruited to play football at Harvard University back in 1987, he never thought he’d find his passion in…underwear??
But almost 30 years later, that’s exactly what’s happened.
Back in 1987, football programs didn’t have all the high tech gear they have in college football programs today – apparel sponsorships, fancy uniforms, different helmets for every game, and 17 different pairs of gloves for catching the ball. The freshman football players got refurbished cleats painted with black spray paint and helmets and shoulder pads that would make any loving mother quake in her patent leather heels.
But the one thing everyone was scurrying to get their hands on at Harvard was an undergarment worn under practice gear and uniforms called U-Trow (pronounced you-tra-eww). Freshman were issued one pair and had to sign a deal with the devil to get a second pair. Upperclassmen hoarded them and traded them for other collectibles with the hockey, lacrosse or baseball players. A virtual black market developed amongst underclassmen, athletes and non-athletes alike competed to get their hands on extra pairs.
In the years since his college graduation, Patterson searched high and low to find something like U-Trow – something made from a natural material with a form fit that he could wear while working out. He was tired of all the polyester/spandex materials and ill fitting underwear…and he went through a lot of them.
So his journey began to create Traü and after 5 years of refining the pattern and cut and narrowing in on the right materials, Patterson is ready to share his creation with the world.
He’s settled on all natural, eco-friendly materials like bamboo, organic cotton and soy and manufacturers everything right here in the U.S.A – Oakland, CA to be exact.
Currently the company manufactures a Men’s line in two colors and plans to expand the offering this summer and into the holiday season.
Patterson and team are on a mission to keep people moving and active – motivating customers to stay physically active is built deeply into their mission. Patterson himself is a staunch advocate for health, fitness and activity having been involved in sports since elementary school and now an avid workout enthusiast including a 20 year yoga practice and surfer for over 25 years.
The company likewise donates a $1 from every sale to youth athletic programs across the country that promote fitness for underprivileged youth and underfunded youth sports programs.
