3 Steps to Help You Achieve Financial Wellness

It can be rather overwhelming when it comes to think about finances. You might have negative thoughts when it comes to looking or thinking about your own. There are some steps and measures you can take in order to establish healthy habits to help deal with debt and building savings.

1. Control Your Debt

Make a plan to control your debt by knowing what you owe. Follow these steps:

  • Pay off credit cards with high interest rates first then get rid of them.
  • Pay as much as you can on your smallest debts and then pay at least the minimum on large ones.
  • If you buy a new home, it should not cost no more than 2 to 2.5 times your household income. Your mortgage should be no more than 80% of the home’s value too.

2. Smart Spending

There are several ways you can learn to be smarter with spending your finances.

  • Write down your expenses for a month to see where your money is going. You can then identify the extra money and apply it to debt or savings.
  • Make a realistic budget.
  • If you have two incomes cover all your expenses with one and use the other income for savings.
  • Before buying something new, ask yourself if you really need it. Maybe wait sometime before deciding to purchase.

3. Increase Your Savings

Are there things you are wanting to save for? Maybe you want to save for retirement, your children’s education, emergencies, and more. Saving your money for these types of things you desire can give you a peace of mind.

  • Give savings the same importance as when you pay your bills. You can easily save a portion of money from your paycheck each time and put it within your savings.
  • Check if your company has automatic savings.
  • Try putting at least 10% of your income into savings. If that’s too much start with 1% of your paycheck and increase over time or if your salary grows.
