The first thing most people think of when they start redecorating their home is adding paint to the walls or perhaps changing the furnishings. However, one of the fastest and often easiest ways to really make a difference to your house is by making over your stairs.

This doesn’t have to be a difficult or expensive job; there are many options you can choose to do yourself; or you can get the professionals in.

Change The Balustrades

The obvious first step is to remove the traditional wooden balustrades and replace it with something a little more modern.  Click this link to get an idea of what options are available.

You can choose to replace them with glass; metal, a different type of wood or any combination of these materials. Your imagination really is your limit when it comes to designing your perfect stair makeover.

Change The Color

If you want something a little quicker and simpler then you can look at changing the color of the staircase. This may mean repainting or varnishing the balustrades which can be a tedious job. But, this will help your stairs to look brighter, fresher and even blend in better with the rest of your home.

Add Light

Stairs are often one of the darkest areas of the house even though you need plenty of light to move up and down them successfully.

You could consider adding wall lights to help brighten the stairs and give them a more modern, spacious feel.

However a better way of doing this is to add an extra window in the wall by the stairs or the roof above it. This will allow light to illuminate the stairs and the floor below.

You can even add mirrors onto the walls to bounce the light and really transform your stair area.

Carpeting

Whether you already have carpets or not you can easily replace them with a new carpet or a stair runner. This can change the look and feel of your stairs and make it quieter to move up and down them.

Of course if you prefer you can keep them as bare wood. Just remove the covering and sand back the wood to get an authentic finish.

Remove The Risers

You need the treads to allow you to navigate up and down the stairs; but you don’t always need the risers. It is worth checking this before you start taking them out; in some designs they are integral to the strength of the staircase.

If this is the case then you can remove the entire staircase and replace it with one that doesn’t have risers.

It will make the stairs feel more invisible and open up the space below.

Replacement

If you really want to go to town with your staircase makeover then you should consider replacing the stairs. Instead of a straight set you can opt for spiral or a dual set with a landing in the middle.

There are many different types of staircases available; you simply need to pick the one you like the most.
