Being a mom means that you are constantly busy, so including a career into that equation only adds to the pressure. Parenting is an unpredictable feat, which brings about something new every single day, and as a result, even the best-made plans can sometimes go awry. Therefore, it is no wonder that so many moms experience feelings of stress throughout daily life. While feelings of stress are completely normal, if stress persists, over time it can cause problems for your physical and mental health. For this reason, it is important to find ways to reduce and combat stress where possible. With this is in mind, here are five simple tips to help you reduce your stress levels as a working mom.
Plan ahead
Planning ahead is vital for the working mom because the more that you can get organized for every eventuality, the less stressed you will feel when something does go wrong. For example, by carrying an emergency kit of supplies in your car, it won’t matter if you accidentally leave the baby’s nappies at home; or, if chaos ensues in the car which requires a quick clean up, then the baby wipes in the trunk will help you take care of the mess. Also, the more that you can streamline your routines, the less likely it is that issues will arise in the first place, helping you to keep your busy day ticking over smoothly.
Socialize when possible
When you are a mom, a lot of your time away from the office is spent with your children. As lovely as it is to have some quality time with your kids, especially as they seem to grow up so fast, it is also vital to find the time to indulge in some more adult conversations too. On your days off of work, why not try and organize a play date with other parents, so that you can still be with your children while getting to enjoy the company of other people who will be understanding of what you are going through. Plus, this will allow your children the opportunity to socialize with their peers too, something which is very important for their intellectual, social and emotional development.
Make lifestyle changes
It is important to take care of yourself because if you aren’t functioning at your physical and emotional best, it will really start to have an impact on your ability to provide energy to your children and concentrate at work. In order to keep up with all of your responsibilities, you need to maintain your energy stores by sustaining a nutritionally balanced diet plan, along with getting enough sleep and exercising where possible. It is also important to just find the time to relax, as being rushed off of your feet all the time will start to run you down. Remember that self-care isn’t just a luxury, it is a necessity.
Ask for help
As hardworking woman juggling a career and young children who are dependent on you, there are going to be times when it all gets a bit too much. It is understandable that you may want to try and cope on your own, however, what is important to remember is that asking for help does not make you a failure in any sense of the word. Everyone needs assistance from time to time, whether it’s just asking family members to babysit for a while so that you can get some well-needed rest, or whether it’s asking a friend to come round and keep you company when you’ve watched Thomas the Tank Engine one too many times. There is also no shame in asking for help in other areas of your life too, such as seeing a doctor or counselor if your stress is becoming difficult to handle, or maybe enlisting someone to help you with the upkeep of your home.
Implement stress management techniques
No matter how hard you try and manage your life effectively, there are always going to be moments of stress as a parent; it’s just unavoidable. However, to make sure that difficult situations don’t become too overwhelming, it is important to find ways to manage your stress proactively. For instance, there are certain exercises which you can do to calm the mind, such as breath work and meditative activities, or actively practicing a positive mental attitude. Doing things that you enjoy to reward yourself after a period of stress can also help the mind and body to regulate stress levels, such as taking up a hobby like art or dancing.
