Anyone who has ever thrown a piece of fresh fruit in their bag for snacking and later retrieved something brown, bruised, or pulpy know this pain. If you’re looking for snack inspiration for your busy life, check out these four ideas.

#1 Whole-Grain Protein Bars

Protein is awesome because it fills you up, helps you maintain energy, is a muscle-builder, and makes it easier to maintain a healthy weight, but all protein bars are not created equal. Although most brands market their products as being wholesome, some of those with the highest protein counts also come packed with unnecessary fat and sugar. Sure, they may taste delicious, but they can secretly sabotage what you’re trying to accomplish. Always check the ingredient list and the nutrition label, so you can be sure you’re getting the protein and fiber you need, and none of the additives you don’t.

#2 Nuts

No matter what your health goals are, there’s a nut for that. According to Health Magazine, almonds, cashews, and pistachios pack the strongest punch in terms of what they deliver versus calorie count. Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson Judy Caplan, RD, explains “Their mix of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and fiber will help you feel full and suppress your appetite.” For heart health, consider walnuts, and for brain health, go for peanuts. Brazil nuts are among the best nuts for men, and almonds are considered the best for overall disease prevention. Oh, and if you’d like to not sabotage your diet, skip macadamia nuts and pecans. They come with the most calories, greatest fat content, and lowest protein.

#3 Seeds

If your goal is to get more fiber, chia and flax seeds are great. However, they’re not exactly snackable, so you’ll need to grind them up and mix them into a smoothie or yogurt. Something more along the lines of pumpkin seeds will travel easily and can be eaten by hand, plus they come loaded with fiber, protein, and magnesium. Sunflower seeds are also applauded for their high Vitamin E content, which is great for your skin and heart. They’re further loaded with protein, fiber, iron, and other vitamins and minerals that contribute to overall wellness. Be wary of labels on seeds, though. Many come cooked in unhealthy oils or coated in unnatural flavors, so you’ll want to select the most unadulterated variety you can find.

#4 Freeze-Dried Fruit

Freeze-dried fruit is pretty awesome because it’s made with a unique process that pulls out the moisture while retaining almost all the nutritional value. Plus, it tastes a whole lot better than that “fresh” banana that’s been sitting in the bottom of your bag for a few hours. Moreover, it’s completely shelf-stable, so you can carry it around for months and it’ll look and taste exactly as it would have if you had eaten it right away. If you want to boost your immune system, look for mango and pineapple. Strawberries, apples, and bananas are equally healthy options that tend to be received well even by picky eaters as well. Overall, these are great healthy snacks for kids.
