At some point in their lives, elderly parents often find the home they are living in is simply too large for them to manage. This may be because the death of a spouse has left them alone and struggling to cope, or due to the onset of serious health issues which reduce their mobility and make it difficult for them to keep up with all the activities necessary to keep the household running efficiently.

Whatever the reason, moving in a smaller property or an assisted living community is often the best way forward. If you have an elderly relative facing such an issue, it is important to be able to be able to provide the right level of support every step of the way.

Take your time

Moving to a smaller property inevitably means sorting through many years’ worth of possessions and deciding what can and what can not be taken. As very few items are likely to be thought of as junk in the eyes of the owner, this needs to be handled with extreme care and sensitivity.

Going through every single item in every room may take a good deal of time, but it is the only way to be sure that all the truly essential items have been identified. Another option is to put all the items into storage and go through them over a more extended period of time.

Give advance notice

The Transportation Security Administration has a series of special screening programs for those passengers who require mobility aids and other medical equipment. However, if you want to be able to take advantage of such a system, you need to provide advance notice to the airline.

Hire professional assistance

In many cases, it may not be practical for you to travel across the country to collect a parent and make the return with them to their new home. Or, perhaps you may need to make the journey by road in order to carry their belongings, but send them by air to reduce their overall travel time to keep them as comfortable as possible.

One way to take a great deal of stress and worry from the trip, especially for someone who is suffering from any kind of debilitating medical condition, is to hire the services of a company such as Flying Angels. By hiring such a service, they can supply a commercial airlines flight nurse who is able to provide care during the flight.

Keep a cool head

Taking one or both parents out of their usual environment is likely to be incredibly stressful. You need to be patient with them and do everything you can to maintain a good sense of humor, especially when things go wrong.

Build in plenty of time into your schedule, so that you are never in a position where you are having to rush due to the danger of missing a connection. Although this may lead to you waiting around at times, this is something you can make provision for well in advance to ensure the time goes by swiftly.
