5 Mistakes to Avoid During Parenthood as a New Parent

Parenting will be one of the most challenging jobs that you will have. Sometimes you will hate it. However, you will end up loving the hardest job you will ever have in your life. Parenthood is filled with many ups and downs but the ride is the most enjoyable one of all you’ll have.

Make your first few month as a new parent enjoyable as possible by following these 5 new parent mistakes to avoid.

Don’t believe everything you hear

The first few weeks with your new baby and before will have you looking for advice from other parents and parenting books. You’ll find yourself with advice from one person and another person that says to do something and then the other says not to do something. Remember that the only opinion in this journey is yours. Consider what advice you have received and care for your new baby to what feels right and comfortable for you and your new family.

Never put yourself last

Make sure you are making time for yourself after your newborn is very necessary. Find time to talk and spend time with friends or to get a couple minutes to yourself. It’s important to continue to nurture yourself and do the things you enjoy so the emotions of stress and frustration do not hold you down from giving your new baby the best care. These are times of joy, not stress.

Don’t compare your baby with other babies

Every new baby is different from the other and their growing at different paces. Don’t focus on if your baby isn’t a meeting the developmental charts… these are just averages after all. As long as yours is within normal range it’s okay to relax. A baby who learns to walk early is just another reason for parents to chase after their little ones.

Not sharing the load with your spouse

Parenthood is both a new chapter and learning curve for new moms and dads in their life. Don’t shut your spouse out. Let each other find their way around caring for your newborn. When each of you are doing your part don’t criticize, hover, or constantly instruct. Remember that caring for a newborn is a requires teamwork with your spouse.

Don’t assume the worst with your baby

There are some newborns that do have health challenges or develop serious illnesses that can cause worries or concerns. Healthy babies can exhibit all sorts of health symptoms that can trigger you to be anxious. As a new parent you are likely to worry more because you never had such a big job before in your life when caring for a little human. Address all your health care concerns with your health care provider.
