5 Ways to Help Your Child Stop Wetting the Bed

You might be frustrated. You might be getting no sleep at all. Waking up in the middle of the night to change the sheets of your child’s bed is dreaded. Some might considered it a rite of passage for parents to experience. However, you still haven’t found a solution to help your child stop wetting the bed.

The good news is wetting the bed is more common than you think! WebMD says there are at least 5 to 7 million kids who are wetting their beds some nights or every night. Boys are twice as much to wet their beds than girls. In addition, Mayo Clinic says most kids are fully toilet trained by 5 years old but can still continue for some children until they are 7.

To help currently exhausted and frustrated moms and dads here are 5 ways to help your child stop wetting the bed.

1. Be supportive

Being angry and blaming your children only adds more stress for them to stay dry. It might make the problem worse for them. Instead, reassure your child. Encourage your child by not getting angry at them, but support them if they are feeling bad about the situation. Kids aren’t wetting the bed on purpose, they are simply trying to learn to grow up. They need your reassurance that they are doing a good job so far. Explaining to your kids that it is normal will not make them feel alone too. You might even want to share your own personal experience when you were a kid.

2. Give simple reminders

Teach your child to go to the bathroom right before bed. Making this a part of his or her nightly routine might help them in the middle of the night to not have accidents. If your child does get up in the middle of the night, encourage them to use the bathroom and that it is okay to do so.

3. Get your child involved

If your child is old enough, ask him or her for ideas. Brainstorming together can be very productive. Your child just might have some great ideas on coming up with a solution. For instance, drinking less water in the evening might be worth giving a shot at it. You can also try waterproof sheets. If your child wets the bed, get them involved in cleaning up the mess. Ask them to help you put the sheets and his or hers PJ’s into the hamper or wash. Maybe if your kid is older they can help you change the sheets.

4. When to call your child’s doctor

If your child wets the bed after the age of 7, which Mayo Clinic suggests, you should consult your doctor about the problem. Your doctor will be able to help you if there is more to the problem than you thought. Your doctor might also have a few trips and tricks of his or her sleeve too!

5. Reward your child

Sometimes a simple reward if your child is staying dry during the night can keep their spirits up. It can be a simple treat. You can use stickers or stars marking days on a calendar for wet and dry days. If there are still wet days, continue to be supportive and remind your child that they are doing a good job and will be there in no time.
