These days we all live extremely busy lives. With career ladders to advance up, kids to take care of, friends to socialize, and marriages to maintain, it’s difficult to find time to do much else. When it comes to food, it’s so easy to go the convenience route, with ready meals, takeaways and pre-made ingredients like pasta sauces and pesto. But one of the most important things we can do for our diets is to eat fresh food and balanced meals. Here are some ways that meal planning could change your diet and your life for the better.

Change The Way You Think About Food
It isn’t just fuel – it’s enabling you to be creative and to research recipes that would best suit you and your family. If you take some enjoyment in food and in knowing what you’re putting into your body, you’ll find it easier to cook well and be healthy.
Assess Your Family’s Needs
At the beginning of each week, assess what the upcoming days will hold for you, and plan as such. Maybe you’ll be out for dinner one night so you’ll need to feed the kids early, or you have a parent-teacher meeting so timings will be affected, or your partner will be away one night so you’ll be able to make the garlicky sauce that he usually complains about. Once you know what you’re preparing for, it’ll be easier to do so. Just add a little leeway in there – we all know that with families and young kids, plans can change at the drop of a hat!

Start Looking For Recipes
Once you know what you’re looking for – for instance, five packed lunches, four dinners at home, three dinners for just the kids – it’ll be easier to research recipes. Ask for some new cookbooks for Christmas, or check out recipes online on sites like Jamie Oliver or the Food Network. Print out your favorite recipes and put them in plastic folders inside a binder, and create a Pinterest board for inspiration. Once you have your recipes in mind, make a food calendar. Remember leftovers – if you’re making pasta with vegetables one night, make extra so you can send it to school with your kids the next day as a nutritious, delicious lunch.
Be Smart When You’re Buying Ingredients
Look online for money saving coupons you can use, such as Foodpanda offers. Using coupons might seem complicated initially but it’s something that you’ll get used to over time, and in the long run it’ll save you a lot of money. Buy in bulk where you can, and make sure that you have a grocery list before you go to the store – you might think that you’ll remember everything you need, but there’s no chance it’ll actually happen!

Make Preparations Every Night For The Next Day
If you have more free time in the evening, get started on your preparations for the next day! If you have your kids’ school lunches ready each evening, it’ll make your mornings a lot less stressful. That way you’ll have more time every day for a leisurely, enjoyable family breakfast.
