How To Give Your Bedroom A New Lease Of Life

Where is the most important room in your house? Many people, wrongly, pinpoint the kitchen as the key room in their home – as this study suggests.

Yet, while it’s undoubtedly important to have somewhere good to rustle up amazing meals, the room additions should be seen as top dog when it comes your home.

Why? Well, an oven and a hob and some skill will get you far in the kitchen without your dream designer worktops but a bad bedroom will leave you struggling to sleep and relax at the end of a long day. That will affect your home and work life and will generally leave you feeling rubbish. By contrast, as this blog shows, a good bedroom is key to unwinding and escaping from the stresses and strains of daily life. A good night’s sleep is vital and a good bedroom sets you on course to get one.

If your room is in a bit of a state and needs a new lease of life, then it’s time to treat this as a priority. How do you do it?

A new bed

First things first, you need a good bed. A decent bed will provide the comfort you need to drift off to sleep each night. It can also help with storage – with underbed space or drawers – and can also be a design feature. Browse online for the shape and style that you like (see the Divan Beds Centre for inspiration).

As we’ll see below, there are many smaller things you can do to make a big difference to your bedroom, but you shouldn’t shirk the need for a decent bed and mattress.

Redecorate

A lick of paint can give any room a new lease of life and can be a fairly inexpensive – and quick – way of bring about a big change.

Colour matters, too. One study has shown that a blue bedroom will help you get more sleep than any other colour – almost two hours more than purple in fact!

A tin or two or light blue paint will easily breathe new life into your room, giving it a fresh, relaxing look.

Organisation

A cluttered room could easily lead to you having a cluttered mind as you try to drift off to sleep. Be ruthless. Everything should either have a storage space or come out of the bedroom entirely.

That might mean the need for a good wardrobe – sliding wardrobe doors are a great way to hide away your clothes in a way to maximise space – a chest of drawers or, as we’ve seen above, a bed with storage space.

Try not to do too much with your bedroom. Do you really need a TV, radio or books in here? The more you try to do – over and above sleeping – the more likely you are to jeopardise a good night’s sleep. As part of a bedroom re-organisation, shed your rooms of distractions.

Extras

Once you’ve got your bed in place, fresh new blue walls and zero clutter, you can top things off with a couple of extras. Don’t go mad – or you’ll be back in a cluttery mess – but the addition of some comfy cushions, a decent lamp or a soft rug could really make a difference. Pick out items that fit your new cool blue colour scheme to build a luxurious room that you’ll love to retreat to every night.
