5 Tips to Get You through Cold & Flu Season

It’s the season to be… taking care of your children who are sick in bed with a cold or flu. Yup, that jolly time of year when children are forced to spend all day indoors with nothing better to do than to share their germs with each other. And while you’ve spent years trying to teach them to share, that’s not exactly what you had in mind. So now you’re stuck playing the dual role of nurse and warden, trying to help your sick children get better while quarantining them from the rest of your children so they don’t get sick too. Don’t you just wish the holiday season could last all year? Okay, so if you haven’t given up reading in hopeless despair, there is some good news. There are some easy things you can do to both prevent the joys of cold and flu season, and speed recovery should the spirit of generosity be too strong.

Here are 5 helpful tips to get you through the most magical time of the year:

1)      BeKOOOL’s Soft Gel Sheets. Cool off your children’s fever for up to 8 hours with these disposable, non-medical soft gel sheets. These are light and easy to carry with you in a bag or purse, and unlike a messy washcloth, they stay in place allowing your children freedom of movement. BeKOOOL Soft Gel Sheets feature favorite classic Disney ® characters (Yay!), and can be purchased in the children’s cold and flu medicine section at CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid.

2)      Essential Oils. Essential oils help with both prevention and rapid recovery from colds or flus. Try mixing a few drops of your favorite essential oil (I recommend the ‘Thieves’ essential oil mix), with shea butter and coconut oil and apply a small amount to the bottom of your children’s feet (and maybe your own as well while you are at it). If you are unfamiliar with essential oils you should do some research first and check for potential allergic reactions first.

3)      Vitamin C. Do worry, you can never overdose on Vitamin C, our body just discards any we don’t need. It’s a good idea to increase your children’s doses of it during cold and flu season to help them both stay healthy and recover quickly.

4)      Probiotics. Yes, I know, these are for healthy digestion. But our digestive track has a huge impact on our immune system and overall health. The healthier your children are overall, the less likely they will be of getting sick in the first place.

5)      Wash hands. Sometimes the basics get overlooked. Having your children wash their hands regularly can do wonders to stop the spread of germs. Soap is also cheaper than the medicine you will be buying if they do get sick. Don’t forget to wash your hands as well, especial after taking care of one of your sick children. Sharing may be caring, but not when it comes to germs.

Of course, make sure to consult your favorite health professional.
