Loving My Lawn All Year Long #ILoveMyLawn

Whoever said “the grass is always greener on the other side” probably didn’t take very good care of their lawn, which is a shame really, because a healthy lawn can be a peaceful, relaxing, and enjoyable place to be. And just because Fall is almost here doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying it either. No, really! There are so many ways to enjoy your lawn while savoring the last warm days of the season outside, and making things extra cozy once the weather changes. Plus, you can get a jump start on making sure your lawn is ready to be enjoyed next spring.

My family loves eating out on the lawn. A picnic table, or just a blanket on the grass is a great way to make a great joy memory (or a cheap romantic date)! If you have family or friends over, it’s great for the kids to be able to run and play. You can revive your favorite lawn games (ours is bocce ball), which are fun to play and easy to clean up! You can even try making up your own rules or go a step further and make up your own games! Another fun way to appreciate your lawn this Fall is to shed some light on it. Literally. Candles, lanterns, and twinkle lights will create a welcoming and magical atmosphere, while a simple fire pit is a great way to cozy up as the night gets cooler.

And how to do keep your lawn green and inviting when warm season grass goes dormant? Try this trick that golf courses use: add a cool season grass seed over your lawn during the fall months. By seeding when the temperatures start cooling down, the cool season grass will take root and thrive throughout the winter months. That way your lawn will be green year-round. You can also add seed to thicken an existing lawn. If your lawn is looking thin, or if you need to fill in some bare patches, fall is the time to reseed. Talk to a turf specialist at a garden shop or university extension agent to find out what type of seed is best for your lawn conditions. Spread the seed over your existing lawn and then water lightly and regularly, making sure the reseeded areas stay moist until the new grass grows in. By seeding in the fall, you’ll reduce the need to make repairs in the spring and jump right back in to enjoying your grass.
