When you are spinning so many plates at one time – like most modern mums do – it can be easy to be forgetful. It can even happen to the most organised people on the planet – our brains can only hold so much information, after all. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to address any issues of forgetfulness when you are a busy mum. We’re going to take you through some of them today.

Look after yourself

First of all, try to take care of yourself a little better. It’s easy to forget about feeding yourself properly, or sleeping enough when you are looking after an entire family. But, making sure that you eat nutritious food, get some exercise, and spend some time with yourself, are all good ways of improving your memory.

Schedule better

While we are on the subject of planning, why not get into the habit of better scheduling? It’s easy to do with modern technology. Use the alert system on your smartphone calendar, and you will never miss another appointment again. Also, think about setting up several alerts for important events, such as a relative’s birthday. You can give yourself a prompt a week before, then a few days after that, and then a final warning with 24 hours to go. At least, it will give you the chance of getting some next day flowers as a gift. When you are a busy mum with young kids, all the days seem to blend into one. It’s only excellent planning that will help you get out of that hole.

Slow down

When you have a thousand and one things to do, it might seem logical to do them all quicker. But, you run the risk of overloading your brain, and you end up being more forgetful than you were previously. It’s best to tackle one thing at a time, prioritise your workload, and do things slowly so you know they have been finished properly.

Get everyone involved

If you have too much to do, get the rest of your family involved. Kids can help by tidying their own rooms, and even little things like bringing their dinner plates to the kitchen after meals can help. Younger children love thinking they are helping out, so you can mix up some of your chores and make it a fun experience for them. That way, you get to play with them while getting things done at the same time. Make sure your partner is pulling their weight, too – although in this day and age, we would like to think you do that already.

Take time out
Finally, make sure you have some time out to yourself. All mums need space to read a book or watch a TV show or movie. Even a relaxing bath every other day can help you relax, breathe a little, and recharge your batteries. It can be hard to find the time, of course. But, with a little better planning you will be able to get those crucial moments into any schedule, regardless of how busy you are.
