Simple Ways to Lower Your Expenses

Your monthly expenses might not seem like that much when you look at them individually, but when you add them all together, the final amount is probably a lot more than you expected. Along with the necessary regular expenses such as your rent and energy bills, there may be a number of other monthly expenses that you pay for.

Saving money on your monthly expenses may not be possible for every bill, but there are plenty of ways in which you can trim expenses down, leaving yourself a bit more money to spend or save. Here are some easy ways to save money on your monthly expenses.

Save on Your Energy Bills

Many homeowners are spending unnecessary money on their energy bills without even realizing it. Performing an energy audit on your home enables you to discover the areas in your home that are causing you to lose excess energy so you can fix them. Things such as drafty windows and doors, old insulation, and even peeling window sealant can all cause hot and cold air to escape, making your heating and cooling systems work harder and costing you more for energy. You can also save money by switching to energy saving light bulbs and ensuring that all electricals are switched off when not in use.

Cancel Unnecessary Expenses

If you signed up for a gym membership six months ago, but have only been twice in that time, chances are you’re paying an expense that you don’t really need. So, unless you’re planning to become a pro bodybuilder and start hitting the gym every day, you should probably cancel your membership. Pay for a day pass when you go instead – it will work out cheaper if you don’t go often.

The same goes for any monthly expense that you’re paying for without really having any need for it. If you’ve taken out insurance on your mobile phone, for example, you should check whether or not it’s included in your homeowner’s or rental insurance, as chances are that it will be and you’re paying for something that you’ve already got. Have a careful look at all of your expenses, and cancel any that you don’t need.

Cut Down on Smoking

Smoking can be a massive drain on your bank account, with cigarette prices constantly on the increase and no plans to reduce them. Quitting smoking is no easy task. However, if you find that you’re always running out of money since you spend so much on cigarettes, work out the amount that you’ll save if you quit and use it as motivation to get you started.

Alternatively, if you’re not ready to quit completely just now, you could try cutting down, smoking a cheaper brand of cigarettes (or even roll your own), or try switching to vaping, which is much cheaper as there’s no need to go and buy a box of cigarettes every day. Vaping also provides you with a great range of differently flavored e-liquids, which many smokers say they actually prefer to traditional cigarettes.

Savvy Grocery Shopping

If you find that you’re spending a lot of money on grocery shopping every week, shopping around to find cheaper products can save you a lot of money on your monthly expenses. Some cheaper grocery stores will sell unbranded items, which are hugely cheaper than their branded counterparts, with just as good quality. Keep in mind that with some branded food and grocery items you really are just paying for a name, so give unbranded items a chance – you may well wonder why you never did so in the first place!

Packed Lunches

If you buy your lunch every day at work, the cost is mounting up every week. Cafes and sandwich bars aren’t cheap, and if you spend just five dollars each day on your lunch at work, that’s $25 per week – and $100 per month! Cut down on your work lunch expenses by making a packed lunch to take into work with you instead of buying it, and spend the $100 that you’ll save by doing this on something a little bit more exciting. Sandwiches, salads, or even batch cooked and frozen meals that you can heat up in a microwave are all good ideas.
