Winter provides more opportunities for criminals. It gets dark earlier and this gives burglars the perfect cover they need to break into homes. As the Christmas season approaches, it becomes even more tempting for thieves. In November and December there’s a greater possibility that there will more cash, gifts and Christmas related products in most people’s homes. This means your home could be an easy target for local criminal gangs. However, you can fight back against winter crime by improving security at home as follows:
Install a CCTV System
Recent developments in camera and imaging technologies have made CCTV systems the perfect tools to improve security in thousands of UK homes. When a potential intruder sees a security camera they are less likely to risk breaking into your property. A CCTV system is relatively cheap to install with a wide range of options available.
The latest cameras are small in size, so they are a neat and tidy option for most homes. You can install a number of outdoor cameras which monitor every part of the exterior of your home. Internal cameras are also an option, especially near entrances. The latest CCTV systems come with a monitor and internal storage so they’re able to store video captured by cameras. Mobile apps are also available that let you view your CCTV footage live on your smart phone. This is a particularly important feature when you’re away from your house or apartment.
Secure Your Windows and Doors
A large percentage of burglars enter homes through windows. Installing some kind of locking mechanism and alarm on all of your windows will reduce the likelihood of a break in. Most thieves look for an easy target. Even a basic window lock and alarm will deter would-be intruders who want to easily enter an apartment or house. The same is true for doors, with more robust locking mechanisms and alarms currently available.
Use Lighting More Effectively
As mentioned earlier, many criminals thrive when it’s dark. However, various types of lighting systems such as motion sensor activated lighting are the perfect solution as you attempt to make your home more secure. When you’re away from your home it’s also a good idea to keep some lights on. This gives the impression to others that there’s someone at home, even though everyone’s out. Lighting up your doorways and other entrances is another way to effectively use lighting to deter possible intruders.
Use Your Common Sense
There are many simple ways to improve your home’s security. Don’t leave valuables in plain sight. Always double check that windows and doors are locked before leaving home. If you have experienced a break-in before, hire locksmiths in London to change the locks.
Winter is a time when criminals have more opportunities to break into houses and apartments all over the UK. Most homes are unprepared for a robbery and become easy targets for criminals. However, you can fight back and ensure that you are not the next victim of a burglary.

Great article. Some good tips in here.
I would also add that you can ask a locksmith if they can do a security audit. Some do this if they are in the area already on another job or you can just pay for a security audit to be done. As you might think you just need a new lock or something like that but then the locksmith could find a few other things that got missed 🙂
