25 Ways To Ask Your Kids “So how was school today?”

25When my cell phone alarm goes off each day at 2:45pm, I begin the short drive to my youngest sons school here in Mexico and anticipate the after school conversation that usually begins with my asking “So how was school today?”  and his typical reply of “fine” , “tortuous”, “A Prison”, “boring”.  As his mom I know those quick one word answers are not a true reflection of his day so, I continue on with several follow-up questions trying to dig for a bigger picture of what his day was like while at school.

Seriously if it is tortuous, I want to hear the stories of why?  I want to know what it was so boring but when you are 13 and a boy one words answers seem to be the in thing.

So, how do I as a mom get my 13 year old fun loving, expressive boy to share more about his hours away from home at the so called prison (School)?

My answer was to search for new questions to deepen our after school conversation and I discovered a great list of 25 Ways To Ask Your Kids “So how was school today?” Without Asking them “So how was school today?” over at Simple Simon and Co.

Here are a few examples from the list:

#1.  What was the best thing that happened at school today?  (What was the worst thing that happened at school today?)

#2.  Tell me something that made you laugh today.

#3.  If you could choose who would you like to sit by in class?  (Who would you NOT want to sit by in class?  Why?)

Are you ready to get your kids atlking after school and sharing their day with you?
