I’m a firm believer in the importance of handwriting in society. Handwriting is important for self-expression, creativity, and communication. I have consistently been writing in hand-written journals since I was 15 and it was an important part of my development into an adult. It’s helped me to express my thoughts and ideas and has served as a great resource to look back at where I came from over the years.

bic 2According to Hanover Research, the percentage of the student population that is not proficient in handwriting may be as high as 25-33 percent.* I find this really concerning. It’s important that we teach kids how awesome writing can be and like most everything for our kids we have to start in the home. Try helping your kids to start a journal. Make it a special occasion and take them out to pick out their own personal journal. Help get them started by giving them fun journal prompts and setting aside a time in their routine for writing. Experts recommend (at least) 15 minutes of handwriting each day for students.* Of course the best practice for teaching our kids is to model changes in our own lifestyle so it would be great to journal alongside of them in your own personal journal.
