How To Teach Your Teen About Learning To Drive

teendrivers_c200pxLearning how to drive can be daunting for some teens, and there are different things you can do as a parent to help them pass their test. If you want your teen to be successful right from their first lesson to their test then here’s a few tips on how you can help…

Role model
Before even teaching them how to drive, the first thing that you should do is to help them keep their calm while on the road. This goes for you as well. Do not panic when something goes wrong and show them a good example. Teach them about safety reminders before starting the teaching process. For instance, remind them to buckle their seatbelts, check if the gas tank is full, and adjust the mirrors and seats according to their height. This will help eliminate some of the nerves of being in a car for the first time.
Teaching your teen to learn how to drive doesn’t always mean that you have to be in the passenger seat. There are a lot of things that your teen can learn from you merely from observation. When driving, be a good and safe driver, talk about what you are doing and why and encourage them to ask questions. Always follow road signs, be wary of other drivers, and be a good role model. Your good driving behavior will hopefully rub off on your teen.

Teach them the basics
Even if your teen is set to learn with a driving school, there’s no reason not to show them the basics to get started. At the very beginning this is simply about showing them how the controls and pedals work and getting the car started. This is all second nature to you but remember that everything is new for your teen and so be methodical and offer a slow, calm introduction into the operation of a vehicle.

Practice makes perfect
Take time to be with your teen to practice driving. The only way they will get used to being behind the wheel is if they learn and then perfect the skills involved. Go around the block or visit an empty parking lot to practice different types of parking. If your teen is currently enrolled in a driving school, make sure that the things you practice coincide with what your teen is currently learning.

On and off road
Teaching your teen how to drive doesn’t stop on the road. Make sure you encourage them to learn the rules of the road by downloading practice questions and set aside time to go through these, helping them to revise any areas in which they struggle.

Teaching your teen how to drive doesn’t have to be difficult. The key to doing it successfully is by leading a good example, being patient, and encouraging your teen to do their best. In no time, your teen will be a good driver and soon you’ll be the one riding in the passenger seat while your teen drives for you.
