Packing for a cruise

The thought of going on holiday with the family is bound to be an exciting one. Especially if you’ve booked a cruise, as this type of getaway has everything you could possibly wish for.

Along with visiting a whole host of destinations, you’ll benefit from a range of on-board activities and entertainment while traveling in style and comfort. The only thing that could prove to be a problem is deciding what to pack.

From voyages around Croatia to sailing the Baltic seas, for those embarking on 2015 cruises, here are some essential suitcase item suggestions as well as a few packing tips and tricks for your vacation on the seas.

Think carefully about clothes

Even if you’re visiting the Mediterranean during the summer, it is advisable to pack a range of different attire. While out at sea when the wind picks up, it can get a little chilly on the deck, so you’ll appreciate an extra layer. Also, if you and your partner are going to attend one of the cruise ship’s evening events, some smart or even formal outfits might be required.

Pack a few essentials in your carry-on

The majority of airlines and operators are incredibly reliable when it comes to delivering checked baggage on time, but it can sometimes be delayed or a little late in arriving. Therefore, you should pack a few different clothes (including bathing costumes and dinner attire), personal medication, important documents and basic toiletries in your carry-on. That way, if there is a delay in getting your suitcase, you can enjoy the ship’s departure port straight away whilst waiting for it to arrive.

Find out what is included

Before leaving home, do some research and find out what is included. There is every chance that your operator will provide some toiletries and facilities in the cabin’s bathroom, from soap and shampoo to hairdryers and bathrobes. However, others might only cover the basics, which could prove to be problematic. So, make sure you know what you’ll be getting and pack accordingly.

Stay organized

The best way to pack a suitcase is to roll up thin or small items, like underwear and t-shirts, but fold thicker, more substantial garments like jeans and jackets. By saving space and being organized, you’ll have more room for souvenirs and mementos. When it comes to unpacking on the ship, you may want to take a foldable shoe or clothes organizer, as some cabins can be fairly small and this hanging wardrobe provides great functionality.

Don’t forget the basics

Although everyday household items should be available on board or at the various ports of call, these will probably be fairly expensive. Therefore, remember to take the basics, which include an alarm clock, batteries, sunscreen, earplugs, sealable plastic bags, plug adaptors, medication and extra coat hangers.

Keep this advice in mind when packing for a cruise and you’ll be able to enjoy your holiday to the fullest.
