Kidobi Challenge: “Making Screen Time Count”

Kidobi_logo_with_taglineSo we’ve officially begun the transition from our easy-going summer into our new adventure of homeschooling. While I homeschooled all of my oldest kids for a few years while they were in elementary school, I’ve never homeschooled my two youngest who are now middle-schoolers. It’s a little different! I actually have to work a lot harder to make it interesting and enjoyable for them! And, on top of that, I’ve realized that they’re capable of doing a lot more things and so I’ve started to teach them more “mature” activities..things that we’ve been calling “life skills”.

When Kidobi® asked me to try out their “Kidobi Challenge” by watching one of their educational videos and then using it as a teaching lesson for my two middle-schoolers, I was somewhat skeptical. Most of the videos suggested were for a younger audience. However, I realized something important: even middle-schoolers will take whatever screen time they can, if the alternative is something as dreadful as school..even baking cookies can be dreadful (amazing, right?!). So, after looking at some of the Kidobi® videos, I settled on this video of Telmo baking cookies and decided I’d teach my children the simple yet sweet-tooth “life skill” of baking sugary desserts. We went with cookies because I have a new recipe that I love and I figured it’s an easy place to start. Now, when I first suggested baking cookies to my boys they were..how should I say..very unenthusiastic. They even questioned why it’s important that they know how to bake cookies! Well, it’s not necessarily important that they know how to bake cookies, but that they learn some essential skills for cooking..and besides, I wanted cookies and I knew they’d want to eat them after, so why not!

And this is where the “Kidobi Challenge” really helped. In order to lure my boys into baking cookies, I promised we’d watch a little cartoon that would teach us how to bake cookies. So I got out all the ingredients, pulled out my laptop and turned on the Telmo baking cookies video. It worked! My kids enjoyed the video and learned one of the most essential lessons of baking cookies..DON’T LEAVE THEM IN TOO LONG! In fact, it’s better to pull them out earlier than later. But we baked our cookies just fine, they tasted delicious..the boys loved them and the “Kidobi Challenge” worked its magic..”Making screen time count!” If you want to read some more about the Kidobi®  Curriculum check it out here.
