“Get Back Up” Trusting God When Life Knocks You Down, by Sheryl Giesbrecht
A book review by Amy Hannold
Life can knock us down in many ways. The absence of hope comes as a result of many experiences we encounter. Deception, fear and our circumstances can keep us from realizing the peace, prosperity and fullness of life God desires for us. Though it can be difficult, we can make the choice to give our despair to God. Once we make that choice, we may waver because we don’t know how to hand our pain to God. Author Sheryl Giesbrecht guides us as she shares her own struggles. She has faced much heartache and loss. In an inspirational, compassionate and relatable way, Sheryl is a light in what may seem like a lonely darkness. There is hope and that message is given through the stories of biblical figures, scripture and a series of steps shared in this book. I found myself marking the pages of most of this book, and highlighting the passages which I turn to every day as I work (and it is work) to be that overcomer I can be through Christ.
Trusting God is the key and every day we can experience His peace in chaos. Like Sheryl, we can grab hold to His promises and let go of what holds us from victory. I was so encouraged by the opportunity to delve into a new way of thinking and strategies that were so well laid out in this book. I can now see a blessing in my own strife, because I can share what I have learned with others. “Get Back Up” is at my side now like a valuable friend, and I recommend it to anyone who needs a path to hope.
