It has been a tradition in our home to bring out the You Are Special plate on occasion to celebrate ones accomplishments or other special moments in life.
My favorite celebration we used the Your Special Plate in our home was the day we received the letter in the mail announcing that our 4th born child was given permission to be held back in school the following year. I know you are already saying CELEBRATE a child not passing into the next grade? The truth is we advocated with our School district to hold him back, and we won the battle for our puzzle child who was in no way ready or prepared to enter the middle school in our town.
We felt he needed another year to grow academically, socially and emotionally. Therefore we said “No” to advancing him and they responded with ” We don’t hold students back” thus the advocating began of meetings. So, when the letter arrived saying they agreed he would remain in the elementary school one more year, not only were we excited as his parents but our child thought he won the lottery. One more year of recess, one more year roaming the school halls you have known since you were 5 years old, one more year of receiving extra help from the same specialists that you know will encourage and embrace your challenges. It was a night to celebrate.
Using a You Are Special Plate in your home can assist in celebrating even the things others might believe to be unworthy of celebrating, yet could make all the difference in the world for your child. Maybe it’s not an A in science on the report card but your child scored high in class participation, citizenship or PE. Maybe your child helped a neighbor walk their dog or do yard work or even said a kind word to a sibling. There are plenty of things to celebrate about our children to encourage them in who God created them to be even when they are not straight A students.
