25 Days of Christmas Giveaways – The ABC’s of Fruits and Vegetables and Beyond

“The ABC’s of Fruits and Vegetables and Beyond” (Ceres Press) is a recently published book that will improve kid’s nutritional status. Out only a short time it is already being bought in quantity for class use. The author’s idea is to affect kid’s attitudes towards these important foods by making the fruit and vegetables names baby’s first words. This is done through funny and clever alphabet poems So for example, ‘B is for banana’ and ‘T is for tomato,’ rather than ‘ball’ and ‘truck.’ This establishes an initial familiar relationship with these foods – so when children see the real thing (on their plate) you can almost see baby thinking “so that’s what a zucchini is not “ugh what is this weird thing on my plate.”

The next step in the book is to strengthen kid’s relationship to these foods in new contexts by developing a broader relationship with them. Thus the second part of the book include recipes, food facts, jokes, geography, further reading.

Coauthored and produced by best-selling food writer David Goldbeck and Jim Henson writer Steve Charney.
