Stretching the Mighty Dollar
Moms, you can stretch the mighty grocery dollar from 30% to 50% by shopping at discount and salvage grocery stores.
Some of you might be asking, “What is a Discount or Salvage Grocery Store?”
The answer is:
A Discount Grocery Store is a grocery store that, through various contracts and sources, liquidate overstocks and salvage groceries. These sell in their stores at discounts ranging from 30% to 50% off what the same item would sell for in your local supermarket. Sometimes these are no frills stores that resemble a warehouse more than a store, sometimes not.
A Salvage Grocery Store is a store that usually sells all the groceries returned by a supermarket to their warehouse. Why were they returned? Sometimes due to a case getting dropped or punctured, which ruins one or two cans or boxes. Sometimes due to a manufacturer overestimating how many of an item to produce. Sometimes due to a label change or warehouse closing. Whatever the reason, these excess goods must be sold. Items whose packaging is compromised are discarded and the rest sent out by the truckload to be sold at your local salvage grocery store.

Are you beginning your back to school shopping yet? Old Navy (www.oldnavy.com) is having a stock up sale – the more you buy, the more you save. With 5 kids I can use all the stock up bargains I can find.
Here is a sample of what I found for my two youngest boys:
Polo shirts $9.00 each when you buy 2 or more
Fleece hoodies (you never can have enough of these) $12.50 each when you buy 2 or more
Shipping right now is a flat $7.00, which is half the cost of my driving expense to Old Navy with our bridge toll and high priced gasoline. This is a bargain for me.

I do most of my grocery shopping at our local IGA. I live in a small town, but as long as I stick to what’s on sale, I usually do just fine. Most of the time, their produce is cheaper than Wal-Mart! I also clip coupons for things we regularly buy, like yogurt.
