5 Smart Ways to Stay Healthy When Your Kids Are Sick

When the cold flu season hits, germs are hopping all over the classrooms, day cares, and playgroups. Parents will begin to wage a ware against those cold and flue symptoms of sore throats, stuffy noses, and high fevers. Every parent expects her child to get sick at some point.

But what does a parent do when the sickness breaks through the walls of their home and taken residence up on one of their kids?

It’s important for parents to try and stay in tip-top shape when their kid becomes sick. You need to try and remain healthy in order to help look after your little ones. There are some easy ways you can get a germ-fighting game plan together.

1. Wash Your Hands

The easiest way to make sure you stay healthy when you are looking after sick kids is washing your hands. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), handwashing can prevent diarrhea-related sickness and respiratory infections, such as a cold or flu, when handwashing properly. The CDC recommends these 5 easy steps for handwashing in order to protect you and your family from getting sick.

When helping a sick child, such as changing a diaper, cleaning a sick child’s area, or helping a child blow his or her nose, a parent should immediately avoid touching their face and washing their hands. You might also consider stocking up on mini bottles of sanitizer and keeping them in your bag or nearby you.

2. Disinfect the Home

To stop spreading the sickness around everyone in your home, you need to disinfect the household. You will want to use cleaning products with the word disinfectant on the label and an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registration number on it. With these two components, means the cleaning products contains ingredients that will fight germs, such as ammonia or bleach.

You’ll want to scrub spots that everyone in the family touches or uses. The bathrooms, kitchen, doorknobs, remote control, and whatever you fill like your family commonly uses in your home. Disinfect these areas a few times a day when your child is sick to keep the germs contained.

When your child is sick, consider switching to hot water on laundry day. Hot water kills more germs than using cold water. Use chlorine bleach when washing lighter color clothing and non-chlorine colorfast bleach when washing darker color clothing in hot water.

3. Boost Your Immune System

When the cold and flu season hit, it’s important to take some precautions so you can stay healthy and look after your sick kids. Getting plenty of sleep can prepare and allow your body to heal when battling with nearby sickness. In addition, make sure you are staying hydrated regularly. Adequate hydration is important overall and helps your body better respond to any sort of sickness. As well, if you are feeling a cold coming on turn to things that will give you a high dose of Vitamin C or Zinc. These two nutrients can help limit the duration of an upper respiratory infection or cold and decrease the duration of symptoms even after a cold starts to set in.

4. No-Sharing Rule

It might sound counterintuitive since we want to teach our child to share and be generous with others. However, when your child gets sick with a cold or flu you don’t want it to spread it further since this illnesses are often spread through hand contact. Viruses and bacteria can live from one hour to a few days on surfaces. Don’t let your child share anything in the house while they are sick. Give them their own towels, food, eating utensils, or even a tube of toothpaste.

5. Forget the Toys

You might feel the urge to clean your children’s toys when they are sick throughout the day, but every time your sick child touches them, they will just re-infect them. You will also put yourself at less risk of getting sick if you wait until your sick child id feeling more better. Once your child is feeling better you can scrub away those germs easily by cleaning them with white vinegar, washing with soap and hot water, and then rinsing in vinegar. Using this cleaning method for those germy toys will make sure the sick germs stop from spreading to others in your home.
