Taking Care of Yourself During the Third Trimester of Pregnancy

You’re on the home stretch of your pregnancy. There are three months left to go, and you’re full of anticipation. The last three months can be the hardest, and there will be times when it feels like it’s never going to end. It can be an incredibly emotional and physically challenging time, but there are some things you can do to make sure the time sails past smoothly.

Treat Your Body Like a Temple

You’re going to experience some dramatic changes in your body during the third trimester. It has to work much harder to nourish and protect your baby, so it needs some extra pampering. Now’s the time when you should be treating yourself to long massages, manicures and pedicures, and trips to the hair salon. All this special treatment is going to make you feel good, which is good for your baby.

Get Plenty of Rest

There’s nothing wrong with being active in the third trimester, but in the later weeks, you need to take more time to rest. Limit your activity levels as much as possible and make sure your partner understands you need pampering. This is a crucial stage of your pregnancy, and you need to avoid stress, frustration, and anxiety.

Watch Your Calories

During the last few months of your pregnancy, you should be gaining 1 pound per week, which means you need some extra calories. These can be from one extra serving of protein-rich food and one of carbohydrates. It should provide the necessary 300 to 450 calories extra per day. You can get these extra calories from foods such as lean meats, low-fat dairy, nuts and nut butter, whole grain bread and cereal, whole wheat pasta and oatmeal.

Get All the Necessary Nutrients

As well as extra calories, your body and the growing baby inside are also going to need the right nutrients. They are necessary for developing healthy bones, brain, tissues, and muscles. Calcium is one of the essential nutrients and can be found in dairy products. Choline is another and is found in eggs, pork and cod. Protein, vitamin B6, zinc, iron, and DHA are other nutrients you need to ensure are in your diet.

Don’t be Hesitant to Contact Your Doctor or Midwife

You should keep track of your baby’s movements and contact your doctor or midwife if there’s any decrease in the number of kicks, twitches, and rolls. If your baby is moving less, it may be a signal of a problem. Similarly, you should contact your doctor immediately if you experience abnormal discharge, fever, chills, headaches, regular or painful contractions, changes, or blind spots in your eyesight, or pain when passing urine.

If you’re unsure that the care you’re receiving from your doctor or midwife is good enough, you always have the option of changing. The health of both your baby and you depend on the best care. There are certain conditions, such as cerebral palsy, that can be caused by medical negligence. Hopefully, you won’t find yourself and your newborn baby in such a position, but it is possible to seek and claim compensation for cerebral palsy.  

Be Prepared

One last tip is to make sure you prepare thoroughly for the birth and the new arrival. Decide where your baby is going to sleep when you bring him or her home. Learn how to breastfeed, read as much as you can about the dos and don’ts of baby care, and plan your routine for when the baby arrives.
