How to Add a Playroom Extension to Your Home

Building out an extension on your home is a great way to increase its value while also adding more living space for your family to feel more comfortable. If you have children and you currently don’t have a playroom, or if your existing playroom is too small, you can add one in the form of an extension on your home. Follow the tips below for some helpful guidance on how to go about doing so.

Hire an Experienced Builder

Because you’ll be adding additional square footage to your existing property, you’ll need to find a builder who has experience in adding extensions onto homes. This will ensure that your extension won’t look like an obvious extension; instead, it will look like it was meant to be a part of your home from the time your house was built. The right builder will know what materials to use to perfectly match the extension to the rest of your home, and they’ll be able to build the extension out to your specifications.

Decide the Space That You Can Afford

Before you can do anything else, you have to decide how big you want the playroom extension to be in terms of square footage. This will let your builder know exactly how to price the project accurately while giving you what you need. The larger the extension, the more expensive it will likely be, although a smaller space could be more challenging to work in than a larger one, so it will ultimately depend upon the project. You also need to consider that an extension on the second floor of your home will likely be more expensive than one that’s done on the ground floor.

Decide What You’ll Do Yourself

How much do you want your contractors to complete, and how much are you planning on doing yourself? If you want to take a DIY route, you can save quite a bit of money, but you’ll need to be handy, and you’ll need to know what to do. For example, you may hire contractors who can put up the new walls and create a new opening to the playroom from your existing walls. But following that, you might be able to go in and paint the walls yourself, add the flooring yourself, etc.

Add Furniture, Toys, and Décor

Once you have the walls up and the flooring is complete, you can work on adding the decorative accessories throughout the space in order to make it feel like a fun and imaginative playroom. For example, adding a few comfortable chairs for your kids to sit in, as well as a desk that they can work on, is a great idea. You can also add fun paintings and décor on the walls, add a ceiling fan to keep the room at the right temperature, and, of course, add furniture that will keep all of the toys organised.

Once your playroom extension is complete, your family will be able to enjoy the additional space, and you can always convert the room to another useful space once the kids are grown.
