I’m teaming up with Samsung to celebrate Women of Steel—”the women in all of our lives who seem to be able to do it all!”
Who’s my woman of steel? My mother.
For the past two years my mother has been consistently growing stronger, as her parents have been growing older. At first it was making and delivering the meals to their home, until my grandmother took a bad fall at which point my mother immediately, and courageously, told them it was time they came and lived with her where she could provide round-the-clock care. So for the last 6-months, she’s been sleeping side-by-side my t grandparents. Sadly, and the through the grief my mother has remained strong, my grandfather passed away. Pushing through with her faith and loyalty to my grandparents, she’s shown me what it means to care for those you love. In fact, I recently had the privilege of stepping in her shoes for a couple weeks while she took a much-needed trip. What I learned: taking care of my grandma was a whole day’s work, though I can only imagine what it would’ve been to take care of my grandfather as well. Each morning, my mother gets up and begins to prepare a 3-course breakfast, assists my grandma into her outfit for the day and wheels her out for breakfast. As soon as she finished breakfast she steals a moment or two to take care of basic household needs, such as laundry or cleaning. And then she begins preparing lunch and joins my grandmother for some
afternoon TV shows. Then it’s off to steal a few moments for herself until preparing dinner and especially dessert (my grandmother loves dessert!). And, finally, it’s time for bed at which point all the little details are necessary to get her mother safely and soundly to sleep all to wake up and repeat.
For me, my mother is a woman of steel. She’s taught me that being a woman of steel takes grace, patience and loyalty. But above all, being a woman of steel takes an immense amount of love and care.
