As the mom of this house I am the key shopper who makes 90% of the purchasing decisions in our home and my family members are the key consumers from food to clothing. About 15 years ago I experienced my first empowering other women and moms shopping experience at a local bazar where items created by women and moms were sent to the US from other countries and I was given the opportunity to support those small women-owned businesses around the world by my purchases. It was after that experience that I became more interested in finding ways to continue supporting these types of business endeavors.
Over the years here at 24/7 MOMS we have featured, supported and encouraged our mom readers to support mom invented products and mom and women small businesses.
Today, I am super excited to share with you about a large corporation that has taken on this same interest. As part of a corporate commitment to empower women worldwide to build better lives for themselves and their families, Walmart has announced the launch of Empowering Women Together.
An Online shopping site offering more than 200 items from 19 businesses in nine countries. Products include jewelry from Peru, Rwanda, Kenya and the U.S.; home accessories from Rwanda and Haiti; paper mache from Haiti, apparel and accessories from Rwanda; iPad and laptop cases from Cambodia and Nepal; coffee and tea sets sourced globally and made in America; and specialty foods made in America and Canada. This new site gives shoppers who want to buy unique and interesting products the opportunity to do so while supporting small women-owned businesses around the world.
What excites me the most about this opportunity Walmart is giving us to empower these moms and women is that with each purchase, we moms can empower the women behind these products to create new jobs and improve both their own lives and the lives of their families and communities.
Empowering Women Together is an element of Walmart’s Global Women’s Economic 5-year commitment through 2016 to source $20 billion from women-owned businesses.
