Rice crispy treats are a favorite all over the globe – and rightfully so, because they’re delicious. Though, many people are skeptical when told that even rice crispy treats can be made into a ‘healthier’ version when you make a few substitutions. Don’t worry – the texture and the taste will still be as good, but you’ll also be making sure you’re meeting your protein requirements and getting in some more fiber.
Protein powder is recommended for nearly everybody – because it’s often the case that a lot of us aren’t actually meeting our protein requirements. This means that our bodies are using up more energy than they’re being given, which can result in muscle mass being burnt up and used as energy stores instead. This is what you want to avoid, especially if you’re trying to build muscle and put on some weight, which is the perfect reason why you should give these treats a try. Likewise, they’re perfect for the whole family! Not only are you going to enjoy them, but your friends and neighbors will too. Make them for yourself, or make them for your kids, these rice crispy treats are a healthier alternative to the regular recipe and they taste just as divine.
There’s a lot of misconception that protein powder can only be used in protein shakes or smoothie bowls, but this really isn’t the case. Likewise, many people also believe that tasty treats can’t be full of protein and somewhat healthier at the same time, which is also not true. Whether it’s savory foods or sweet desserts, protein powder is a versatile supplement that makes a great addition to a number of different dishes that can cater to everybody’s tastes.
In this recipe, we’re going to replace the marshmallows with honey, add some oats to give some fiber to the treats, and then, of course, mix in some excellent protein powder to really give it that extra boost. We use Naked Nutrition proteins because they have a bunch of unflavored options and are ethically sourced. You want to make sure that you’re using good-quality, organic or natural protein powder as that’ll help ensure that you get the best nutrients you can. We’ve also added in peanut butter – which can be substituted for another nut butter if you wish – to add some more flavor and to thicken up the mixture. These ingredients combined will provide an excellent, dense tray of treats that will be sure to have people coming back for seconds. If you’re making this in a standard 9×9 baking dish, you should get about 9 squares of protein-packed goodness.
To make these treats, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- 1 scoop of protein powder
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cup Rice Krispies
- ½ cup oats
- ¼ smooth peanut butter (or a nut butter of your choice)
- Cooking spray
First, take the baking dish (which should be a standard 9×9 dish) and coat it with the cooking spray so that the mixture can easily be removed once it’s cooled. In a large sauce pot or pan, melt the butter over a low to medium heat until it’s smooth. Be careful not to burn it, but you do want it fully melted.
Then, stir in the honey, the vanilla extract, and the nut butter of your choice. We recommend smooth peanut butter because of the consistency and the taste that it provides, but you can use almond butter or another alternative if you prefer. Once combined, turn off the heat and finally add the rice crispies, the oats, and the protein powder and combine until everything is thoroughly coated. Press the mixture evenly into the baking dish and cover, before putting it in the fridge and allowing it to cool for about 20 minutes.
Once cool, feel free to divide them up, share them out, or just help yourself and enjoy!
