Did you know that our feet have all the technology that we need, and most modern shoes are actually deforming our feet and causing all sorts of health problems? In fact, to paint a more scientific picture, our muscles and tendons are quite capable of providing natural shock absorption, while the body’s nervous system (and the 200,000 receptors in the soles of the feet) provide natural sensory feedback, and the skeletal system and Great Toe provide natural motion control.
With such incredible tools, we should be getting as close to barefoot as possible instead of cramming our feet into narrow, inflexible shoes that damage our feet and backs. And, while adults make conscious decisions to wear damaging shoes, kids don’t typically get that choice—instead, they are forced into a rigid, non-foot-shaped shoe that hinders natural foot development and sets them up for a lifetime of issues.
According to a recent Foot and Ankle Online Journal article, children’s feet are quite malleable and can be quickly and easily distorted. Dr. Wilkinson notes that most children’s shoes on the market today are narrow and stiff, which can adversely alter foot shape in as little as six weeks, with the extent of deformity worsening with each year wearing such shoes.
So how can minimalistic shoes help? A strong and natural foot is the foundation of healthy movement and a child’s foot is soft and malleable and not fully formed until late teenage years, so a shoe that allows for healthy movement is a great start. Children’s shoes should be flat, wide and flexible, not narrow and stiff. As we want to promote an active lifestyle and safety, shoes should come with a puncture resistant sole to protect them from everyday hazards underfoot, while giving feet the space to grow. Freedom for the feet, the right amount of sensory feedback, along with adequate protection ensures a child’s foot can grow as nature intended.
