So, what’s your favourite part of the day? Brushing your teeth? I don’t think so. For me, brushing my teeth is the dull stuff I’ve got to do before I get the reward of collapsing into bed for maybe a few hours sleep before one of my precious little darlings wakes me up to bug me YET AGAIN.
So brushing might be boring for adults but it can be even more boring for children, once they’ve got over the novelty value of it. We grown-ups know that brushing our teeth is one of the baselines of health, as research suggests that poor dental health is linked to horrors like heart disease and arthritis. But children can’t always deal with a reward in they won’t get til the long term future. So the trick to get your kids brushing well every day is to make it fun. Here are a few tips from our friends at myBrushies.com to help make your kids actually enjoy brushing:
Give them ownership
You’ve already let your kids choose their very own toothbrush and toothpaste, right? Feeling ownership of the task through giving them as much control as possible will help them engage with what they’ve got to do.
Brush with them
Younger kids love copying their parents so if you sit down at their level and start brushing, it changes the nature of the task from something dull to something they can do with Mommy. And, hey, you get to brush more! Great hygiene, moms!
Use a timer
The American Dental Association recommends that we brush for two minutes (30 seconds in each quadrant of our mouths) so get a two-minute kitchen timer and get timing! If your child can see the end of the task ahead, they’re more likely to finish the task properly.
Make a song up
This is where you get to make up your very own silly brushing song, complete with ridiculous cartoon voices, and sing about the heroic brush cleaning out the sugar bugs, or how we’re going to get our teeth clean and sparkly – anything teeth-related. Making brushing fun for your kids will reframe brushing as a game for them.
Get a Brushie
If you don’t want to unleash your singing voice on your kids then get them a Brushie. A Brushie is an app-based game that makes brushing fun. The Brushies team have used gaming psychology and the latest tech to design a game that helps children enjoy brushing their teeth and at the same time they learn great dental hygiene habits. Kids can play Brushie games on their own or they can create brushing “circles” with their siblings and friends. The first Brushie – Pearly, a pink (or blue, if you hate pink) penguin – is just about to hit the market and 247Moms have snaffled a discount for all our gorgeous parents out there.
